The Jewish New Year began at sunset Wednesday evening. It also marks one of the major holidays of Judaism and the start of the "High Holy Day" period, which ends a week from Saturday.

Melrose Jewish families mark High Holy Days

Some 85 families in Melrose will observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur — the two holidays that mark the beginning and end of the Jewish High Holy Days — at Temple Beth Shalom in Melrose this month, highlighting a 10-day period of spiritual contemplation and reflection in the Jewish calendar.

Temple Israel, Valdosta, ushers in the Jewish New Year or Rosh Ha’shanah 2010 this evening.
